2015-12-15: Hi! You're probably here because you did a Google search for 'plus sized horseback riders' or you saw my content quoted elsewhere. There are a couple of things I'd like you to know.

I am still here! But I am living away from my horses and not riding often. I could tell you a lie and say that I am, but I have always endeavored to give you the truth here. As a result, I'm not feeling terribly motivated to write blog posts and I feel out of touch with the community.

I'd love for you to stay a while and look back through the archives. Visit the links listed below. We still have an active forum community and I post on the Facebook page from time to time.

I have tentative plans to try to get more involved in the horse world in 2016, and I will absolutely share whatever that adventure becomes with you, so keep checking back!

Guest Blog Submissions

I am always looking for new guest bloggers - whether you are a recurring writer or a one-time blogger just telling us your story - the community that has evolved around this blog is for you. As such, we would love to share your story, your expertise, your product reviews - anything that pertains to the theme of the blog!

We welcome written articles that follow the running theme of the blog which is largely plus sized equestrians - we do not condone body shaming or self-deprecation. While it is completely appropriate to share your weight loss journey, the underlying theme of the blog is not weight loss, but plus sized riders.

If you have any questions about the motivations and mission of the blog, please do an Internet search for "Health At Every Size" and "This Body Is Not An Apology".

If you have something to share that follows the values set forth by the blog, by all means, email me, Amanda and show me what you've got!

  1. Just found your site and really have been enjoying this. Also has given me some inspiration to continue to ride my horse. I can really relate to your articles as that is how I have been feeling. Thank you.

  2. My entire life I've been the big girl. I got my first horse at 5 and have had them ever since. My family used to critisize me for riding my horses. (my two horses now are both 1200 lbs of pure muscle) finding this blog has helped me get the confidence to ride again. Its what i enjoy and now im not ashamed, thank you!

  3. Must say, I was ready to give up riding over the weekend. Being an 1.8m tall overweight woman who can't find a saddle big enough for her and small enough for her short backed horse. This blog inspired me not to give up on my passion, and feeling good knowing there are other riders having fun on their precious horses not giving up because of the weight issue. I felt like I was the only fat person insisting on riding in the whole world... Thanks for saving a fat rider :-) :-)

  4. Hi. Just wanted to vent about something that happened to me today. Took my family to a "nice farm" advertised on line (for trail riding). All pictures looked great, horses looked well kept, and yes they even had what I thought were well muscled and big horses for a big girl like me. I noticed they had a Belgian and a Percheron in the pics, so it was no surprise when the horse they picked for me came out of the barn and it was the Belgian. At first I was timid because a fly bit him and he seemed spooked, but calmed down. I found out that there was old dried up poop on his side. Thus the big fly and then a bee was flying around him so he pushed me with his nuzzle. That was a little intimidating because he was sooo big and tall. When it came time to actually mount and get on,I for some reason froze with fear because he was sooo tall. I have ridden horses before and have even trail ridden, but never on such a tall horse. I had an anxiety attack and unfortunately did not trail ride with my husband and daughter. I could see the disappointment in their eyes. Sadly I feel that this was my one opportunity to ride with my family and I blew it because I was too afraid to get on a horse 17 or 18 hh. Why does it always have to be me on the Belgian?
I know this farm had other horses that were big and not draft horses. I feel that I could have ridden on one of those, but they did not offer any other horses nor did they offer to help me get on my horse or suggest any ways to get up. I think the mounting block was my enemy today! The farm was also rather dirty...and not well kept. So disappointing. I want to cry... and I want to inform people that I can ride other horses that are not draft horses or horses that are too tall for me! I also want to give up, but your blog has inspired me to look elsewhere for a good riding horse or trail horse! There has to be a horse out there for me somewhere!
